Rhode island birds, red winged black bird, woodpecker, gold finch

I do love watching my back yard and my feeders  some new faces all the time

Red winged blackbird--- sound 

a very common Blackbird he was my NH high school mascot 

Downy woodpecker sound 

they say is the smallest woodpecker 

Male Goldfinch   sound

the male goldfinch gets bright yellow during mate finding and

 during the winter they are an olive color they love feeders so watch for them

Brown-headed Cowbird

The Brown-headed cowbird has become very common across

The country this is a male black body, thick beak brown head  the

Female  is a lighter shade of brown all over

same dark beak the juvenal is a little slimmer and is speckled brown, black and white. 

a problem with this bird is it likes to lay their eggs in nests of others causing

a decline in other species. because they are feeding the bigger cowbird baby more than their own baby's keeping up is hard.

in the old days they would follow cattle and eat the

Bugs that cattle stirred up from the grass. Sound

this is a ren feeding a cowbird the cowbirds mom left her egg in the rens nest for her to raise

Baby robin in trouble

Baby robin in trouble he flew from my deck to where he is about 15 feet and stayed most of the afternoon he seems to be having trouble flying mom Robin keeps feeding him and trying to talk him into coming with her. 

The puffed up Robin

This robin was puffed up on a low branch fr an hour. 

I was thinking maybe she was protecting babies

A week ago as we BBQ

as we sat in the beautiful sun waiting for it to set, cooking on the grill we looked up and saw morning doves playing. I do think a female was playing hard to get but not for long. (images copyright and watermarked Lisa Roy)

Today's birds in my back yard spring play

While playing with the dogs in yard in the sun. It was a bit chilly but spring is like that I saw this beautiful cardinal

Listen to him sing!!!  I think he was upset with me taking pics. 

 and this little guy was hopping abut the grass as i was taking the photos not a care  the world then he flew off to the feeders next door.

and this robin above my head in our big old maple. I hope your day was as beautiful as mine.
